Performance Analytics for Computational Experiments (PACE)
Understanding computational performance of a complex coupled model like the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) poses a singular challenge to domain and computational scientists. Toward that goal, we developed PACE (Performance Analytics for Computational Experiments) , a web-enabled framework to summarize performance data collected from E3SM experiments to derive insights and present them through a web portal.
The primary goal of PACE is to serve as a central hub of performance data to provide an executive summary of E3SM experiment performance.

PACE Web Portal
To navigate to the portal go to Performance Analytics for Computational Experiments (PACE). 10 most recent experiments are displayed by defauly on the home screen. To view more experiments, click on More Exps button at bottom of the list.

There is a high level navigation menu based on specific platforms, benchmarks, simulations etc. at the top of the page. Navigating through this will load up the 10 most recent experiments meeting the respective criteria. To view more, click on the More Exps button at bottom of the list.

An user can also search for desired set of experiments using the search functionality. The portal offers a free form search with auto complete capability. The experiments can be sorted by available options in the dropbox menu in either ascending and descending order.

Advanced search capability is also available. For example looking for specific user and machine combination, we can do:
user:gaurab machine:summit
More than one search can also be performed at a time by using pipe (|) for search queries. For example looking for experiments by 2 different users, we can do:
user:gaurab | user:sarat
If you are looking for a exact match prepend ‘$’ keyword to your search query. More details about advanced search can be found here .
Another capability available is a summary scatter plot. Click on the ‘Scatter Plot’ button on top right. This will display a scatter graph of 50 most recent experiments matching the search criteria. The summary can be displayed for Machine, User, Compset and Res. To view for specific experiments, click on labels on top of graph which will hide/show that data point. Use labels to filter further down to your interest.

Single Experiment
To view the specific experiment, click anywhere on the experiment row. This will open up the details page for that experiment.

Experiment details
The experiment details page displays all the metadata of the experiment. In Left section, it displays all the available graph of option for the current experiments. To download experiment click on Download Raw Data.

To add notes to this experiment, click on Add/Edit button which will open up a new tab where you can add notes and save it.

Memory Usage Profile
A recent version of E3SM master includes an improvement in our memory usage profiling. This page shows how to use it to check for possible memory leaks and out-of-memory type of issues.
Memory usage is captured at a node-level for each of 9 ROOTPE component nodes (CPL, ATM, LND, ICE, OCN, GLC, ROF, WAV, IAC) once-a-day Memory usage is represented by a pair of “highwater” and “usage” numbers. The highwater number represents a total memory footprint of a process including data paged out to disk (virtual memory) and the usage number represents memory actually residing in RAM (resident set size). Per-task memory snapshots are summed up across all tasks on a node to derive on-node memory highwater and memory usage in megabytes.
Both Resident and Virtual memory profiling graph is displayed. Click on labels to filter the PE component for your desire view.

Model Component
In Model Component section, it displays the runtime table and PE layout of the model components.
Model Input Files
In this sections, all the model input files are stored and can be viewed in detail by clicking on it. Following Input file are available XML Inputs, Namelist Inputs, and RC Inputs.
Multiple Experiments
To compare multiple experiments, check boxes for your desired experiments and available graph options will light up green. This will allow for multiple experiments to be viewed simultaneously in their respective graphs.

After checking the box for your desired experiments. Available graphs are flame, tree and atmosphere component. Available graphs buttons will light up green.

Flame graph
Looking at how time is distributed on various application ridges. Flame graph helps to view the row of various processes time distribution. The time process can be navigeted further deeper by clicking on the process time bar in flame graph.

Tree graph
Tree graph shows the time distributed for each componenent of process time as a bar chart.

Atmosphere componenet graph
This graph shows the time distribution of the atmosphere component process. Following process time are displayed in the graph To view for specific experiments, click on labels on top of graph which will hide/show that data point. Use labels to filter further down to your interest.

Getting-Started-Upload
Note
The experiments executed on all E3SM supported supercomputers are automatically uploaded to PACE nightly.
These instructions are applicable for manually uploading experiment data. First, download the pace upload client and run the client to upload experiments to PACE.
Tool
Please download and use this tool: Python 3 version or Python 2 version to upload experiment data directly from supercomputers.
To download using command line:

This is a Python-based tool that can be executed directly (./pace-upload) once you download and make it executable. The system-wide Python 2.x installation on Summit/Theta/Cori/Compy has the requisite ‘requests’ module to enable this tool to work. It presently handles uploading user data in performance archive directories from all E3SM supported machines. The server checks for duplicates while processing uploaded data.
Please see the demo for reference. A log file is written at the end that details the upload progress and notes any errors.

Architecture
Performance data from simulations executed on supported supercomputers is automatically uploaded to PACE. PACE processes and ingests that information into the backend database. Finally, an user can interactively explore the performance data through the web portal.
